APN Settings for Mobile Networks in Trinidad and Tobago
If you want to use any type of mobile data on your phone you need to have the correct cellular network settings for your mobile provider. Most phones come with this information preconfigured but there are some inconsistencies, especially when using custom roms. The purpose of this article is to publish the correct APN settings required for use with either of the two mobile operators in Trinidad and Tobago, Bmobile or Digicel.
This article was originally published on 2017-10-15 but has been revised on 2020-06-30 to include updated information.
Most modern phones will have these settings, but some settings may not be visible on every handset. Sometimes phone manufacturers hide certain options to prevent users from doing stupid things so we can rightfully assume that if you don't see a setting then either it's preconfigured or will be deduced internally from the settings you are able to input. In general, settings and parameters not explicitly mentioned can be left blank or not set without consequence. Every effort will be made to keep this article accurate and up to date.
APN Settings for TSTT Bmobile Postpaid Data 1
- NAME: TSTT Postpaid Data
- APN: internet
- all other settings should remain untouched.
APN Settings for TSTT Bmobile Postpaid Data 2
- NAME: TSTT Postpaid Data
- APN: bmobile
- all other settings should remain untouched.
Note that Bmobile's tech support personnel will say that you need to use the "bmobile" APN for LTE data connections, but this is not true, both APNs fully support 2G, 3G, and LTE data connections. Maybe in future the company may choose to retire the "internet" APN in favour of the "bmobile" APN.
APN Settings for TSTT Bmobile Prepaid Data
- NAME: TSTT Prepaid Data
- APN: bconnected
- all other settings should remain untouched.
TSTT and LTE
Are these settings relevant to TSTT's LTE network? The answer is yes, these settings are correct and remain relevant but to access the LTE network you need to have an LTE sim card, an LTE capable phone or tablet, and an LTE data plan. If you intend to buy an unlocked phone, I suggest looking at the specifications to ensure it's compatible with LTE Band2-1900MHz and LTE Band38-2600MHz for use with TSTT.
At TSTT's 4G LTE launch event, TSTT's CEO Dr Ronald Walcott said that TSTT was using its existing 1900MHz spectrum to provide the 4G LTE service. TSTT's chairman Mr Emile Elias said TSTT demanded the 700MHz spectrum from its regulator, the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT), and TSTT is contemplating legal action against TATT, if necessary, to ensure that the company gets the allocation of spectrum.
The sources of this information were old articles from the Trinidad Guardian newspaper and the Newsday newspaper both dated December 10, 2016. I've found no evidence to suggest that TSTT is using the 700MHz band as yet.
APN Settings for Digicel Postpaid or Prepaid Data
- NAME: Digicel Data
- APN: web.digiceltt.com
- all other settings should remain untouched.
The "name" parameter has no effect on the connection, it's just a name for the connection profile and can be set to anything.
What is Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)?
Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is a legacy cellular service that comes with high tariffs and little benefits. It's more reliable and cost effective to use modern messaging apps that rely on WiFi or mobile data. MMS settings have been included in this article for the sake of completeness but I can't think of a single reason why anyone would want to use MMS in 2017, especially since it costs approximately 1TTD per message.
